I'm looking for a NAS solution

These days I've been looking for a NAS (Networked attached storage) solution. I have lots of photos and videos (especially after the wedding!) and I don't want to just keep them on my desktop. I would like a central place to keep all those files. Right now, that "place" is my desktop, but it makes sharing difficult. However, there are many NAS solutions out there and I don't know which one I want.

Here are my thoughts/questions:

I don't want more than 2 disks. More disks just means more failures, and I don't need the performance of more spindles. I don't have gigabit ethernet and most devices are over wireless ethernet, so my network is the bottleneck.

I want it to be able to share with Windows, Mac, and linux, since I have all 3. I think that means CIFS, AFP, and NFS, but I'm not sure.

I want more reliability. Can I get that from RAID-1 alone, or will I need backups as well?

Can NAS RAID-1 boxes use drives from different manufacturers?

For a RAID-1 setup, if 1 drive fails, can it still serve off the other drive?

If I remove a drive from a RAID-1 setup, is it readable by other computers, or is there some special RAID formatting on the drives?

I don't know all the answers yet, but from what I can tell, I don't think a 2 disk NAS with RAID-1 will do what I want. I think the single point of data loss is in the raid controller. If this is true, I think I will just go with a single drive NAS which does automatic backups to another external drive, which will give me a poor man's RAID-1, no RAID controller to depend on, and the sharing capabilities of a NAS.

But if there is a great 2 disk RAID-1 NAS, then let me know!

Crappy ATT Experience

I justed wanted to transfer my DSL service to my new apartment. I called over a week before I moved in and they assured me that it would be turned on at the new place on that Friday. As expected, the service turned off at the old place on moving day. However, at the new place, there was no service. Ok, maybe there is a delay...

I waited another day. Still nothing. I called them, and of course there is tons of holding and tons of transferring. Someone actually helps me and does all these line tests. They all thought the DSL should have been fine. The next day, someone called me back and said the line was fine, so obviously I needed someone to come and fix something because I still saw blinking red lights.

On Monday, I called ATT again and after about an hour of holding and transferring, I get an appointment scheduled for Wednesday morning. They give me a range 8AM to 12 NOON, which is pretty long, but whatever, I could just go into work after that.

Wednesday morning comes around and no one shows for a couple hours. I called ATT again, and after 30 minutes of holding and transferring, I get a live person to talk to, and he said that ATT cancelled my appointment. The cancelled my appointment without telling me!! Apparently, they fixed some other problem the night before, and lumped my issue with that solution, so they just didn't come. So, I waited for hours for nothing, and I still had no internet. STUPID!

Not only did they cancel on me without contacting me, but then they couldn't do anything to make up for it. They couldn't accelerate an appointment, or have some non-work hour time. Also, they couldn't prioritize me at all, or give me at least a smaller window of waiting. I figured they could have at least tried to make up for their incompetence, but no, they stayed true to the word.

I rescheduled for Friday, and FINALLY someone showed up. It took almost 2 hours to get everything working, and now, after a week battling with ATT, service is back to normal...

On a random note, Herie is making me say I love her, so I guess I love her... =)

Crappy JetBlue Experience

I had a horrible time getting home from Christmas with JetBlue. I was supposed to fly home Friday night, but as I was about drive to the airport, JetBlue called me to tell me that my flight was canceled. It took a while to reschedule, but I got a new flight the next night from OAK.

That was ok so far... I got to the airport at 10:30pm for my 11:30pm flight. I found out that the flight was delayed, to leave at 1:15am. Ok, that sucked. I waited for a while and the plane never showed up. The arriving flight came in at 1:30am. Then, at around 2:00am, they tell us that we couldn't begin boarding because they had no first officer. They found one, but he was in a hotel an hour away, so we wouldn't be able to board until 3:00am. Dang, that sucked. So, we didn't board at 3, but started at 3:30am, and took off at 4:00am. Crap.

I took off after I would have arrived if the flight wasn't delayed. Booo...

I'm so tired.

Winning Redskins!

The Washington Redskins are winning in probably the toughest/best division in the NFC and the NFL. The Redskins were supposed to be the worst team in the division, but we have already beaten the Cowboys and Eagles (both away games)!! Go Redskins, and yay football!! =)

Tennis Power!!

I knocked the racquet out of someone's hand today!! =) Woohoo!! That has been one of my tennis goals for a long time. I'm all about power in tennis. Who needs finesse? Not me! =) If I can knock the racquet out of a hand, I will win the point! =)

I also hit a twist serve today! That was another tennis goal! Ryoma Echizen, here I come! =)

I think my next goal is to hit the ball through the other guy's strings, hahaha!!

Highway Gas Mileage!

Bubbles, my Mazda3, has a gas mileage computer built in that calculates instantaneous and average gas mileage. I decided to actually look at it today, after I just reset the numbers. I just filled up and started going home on the highway. Here are two interesting observations:

-My average gas miles per gallon was 38.8 mpg, going 67 mph, for 30 miles. 38.8 mpg sounds really good!! =)
-Using air conditioning reduces mileage by 6 mpg, while going 67 mph. Hopefully, my tinted windows keeps me from using a/c too often...

MySQL Underwear!!

I went to the MySQL Conference 2008 from April 15-17 this week. Some of it was actually pretty interesting, and relevant to what I do. However, the days were freakin' long... They started at 8:30 AM and went through to 6:00 PM, and technically to 10:30 PM, but I didn't stay that late. It was basically talks after talks after talks, very similar to school and class, so it was really, really hard for me to stay awake... It was interesting to hear about how other people use MySQL, and how we use it in a much larger scale than everyone else... =) My tech lead gave a talk about our performance improvements and it was PACKED, and he basically showed how our version beat out everyone else in terms of concurrent load on multi-core systems. TONS of people were interested in our code. =) I also got to talk with some of the leads of MySQL, and might be talking with them again in Seattle. Facebook even wanted to talk to me about certain architecture issues, so that was interesting... =)

AND, I got MySQL boxers from the conference!! =)

Unfortunately, I couldn't do ANY work during the week, so I might have to do crap over the weekend... =/

1) Find a Jess who left the computer, but still signed into Gmail.
2) Create label "POO".
3) Create filter to find all messages that "has the words" of her email address.
4) Make filter star the messages and apply the label "POO".
5) Change all the colors of existing labels.
6) Change the color of the "POO" label to diarrhea brown.
7) Record when she checks her email again... =)
